IDIOMATIC: JUVENTUDE, AUTORIA E IDENTIDADE NO NOVO ROCK BRASILEIRO

Depois do show, porém, a decisão pareceu clara: CONTINUAR.

As letras utilizam metáforas e procuram evitar interpretações excessivamente literais.

O processo criativo procura preservar a espontaneidade.

A composição ocupa posição central no projeto.

Preservar a essência diante do crescimento

IDIOMATIC: YOUTH, ORIGINALITY, AND IDENTITY IN THE NEW BRAZILIAN ROCK SCENE

From Santos, São Paulo, to new horizons, young musicians are betting on their own compositions, rock in English, and an artistic identity forged from their very first performance.

CULTURAL PANORAMA | BY JOHANN PEER

In a music scene marked by a diversity of styles, new promotional platforms, and a transformation in the way artists connect with their audience, a new generation is beginning to make its mark with original work and fresh perspectives on rock.

It is in this context that IDIOMATIC emerges—an original rock band formed in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, by young musicians Vini Lollel and Jule Holls. While still in elementary school, the band members turned their interest in music into an artistic project that combines original compositions, influences from Brazilian and international rock, and a communicative approach that transcends borders.

Their journey officially began on January 29, 2026, at the Rusbé Concert Hall. Just a few months later, the band had already performed on other stages, opened for Massacration, established contacts with media outlets, and brought their original music to different audiences.

More than just a story of a debut, the experience reveals a fundamental aspect of IDIOMATIC: the understanding that talent must go hand in hand with preparation, discipline, study, and teamwork.

The First Stage and the Beginning of a Journey

The debut at Rusbé marked a decisive moment. Before taking the stage, the band members still didn’t know exactly what the emotional response to their first performance would be. After the show, however, the decision seemed clear: to continue.

The preparation was intense. It consisted of 12 consecutive days of rehearsals—about four hours a day—for a show lasting approximately two and a half hours, featuring seven original songs and 20 covers from the international repertoire.

The experience also required some adjustment. During rehearsals, Vini struggled with a sore throat caused by a cold, prompting Jule to temporarily take over lead vocals during rehearsals with the other musicians.

For the band, that situation ultimately became a learning experience.

The first show also revealed areas for improvement: stage presence, costumes, audience interaction, and the organization of the performance. Based on these observations, each new show came to be seen as an opportunity for growth.

Another challenge lay offstage: balancing rehearsals, schoolwork, and learning English. This routine required organization and family support, demonstrating that building an artistic career also involves responsibility and planning.

Every Stage Is Like a New School

After their debut, IDIOMATIC went through various experiences, including performances at the Mobydick Concert Hall in Santos and the Brazuca Concert Hall in Campinas, where they opened for Massacration.

The band says that every performance provides lessons for the next show.

One such discovery came after reviewing footage from a show at Mobydick. The band members realized they could make the musical flow more dynamic by reducing the breaks between songs.

The strategy was implemented later and received a positive response from the audience.

For these young musicians, stage presence also means understanding the characteristics of each venue. The size of the stage, the placement of the instruments, and the freedom of movement can completely transform the experience of a performance.

In this sense, IDIOMATIC seeks to develop a performance that combines technique, energy, and communication.

English as a Bridge to the World

One of the most striking aspects of the project is the decision to work primarily with original songs in English.

The band already has a repertoire of 13 compositions and sees the language as an opportunity to broaden their dialogue with listeners from different countries.

This choice is also tied to the members’ interest in learning English and their belief that the language can serve as a bridge for international communication.

According to the musicians, the intention is not simply to reach foreign listeners, but to ensure that the songs are recognized for their sound, the ideas conveyed in the lyrics, and their artistic identity.

Their inspiration comes from Brazilian artists who have transcended borders, such as Tom Jobim and Sepultura, demonstrating that Brazilian music can connect with international audiences without necessarily abandoning its roots.

IDIOMATIC: music to interpret and feel

The band’s name itself conveys an important part of its artistic vision.

The lyrics use metaphors and seek to avoid overly literal interpretations. The idea is to allow each listener to establish their own connection with the music.

A song may address a specific situation, but it can take on new meanings depending on the listener’s experience.

This concept appears, for example, in “The Way I Need,” a song that explores relationships and emotional choices based on the idea that different people may have different ways of understanding love.

For IDIOMATIC, music doesn’t have to provide a single answer. It can spark reflection and allow the audience to find their own interpretation.

Influences Without Compromising Their Identity

The band’s musical background brings together quite distinct influences.

Among the international acts mentioned are Queen, Green Day, Guns N’ Roses, blink-182, the Ramones, The Offspring, Bon Jovi, and Black Sabbath. On the Brazilian scene, influences include CPM 22, Raimundos, Legião Urbana, and Charlie Brown Jr.

The band, however, makes a point of distinguishing between influence and imitation.

According to the members, IDIOMATIC was born with its own identity. These references are part of the young musicians’ musical background, but they do not determine the final outcome of their compositions.

The creative process seeks to preserve spontaneity. An idea can arise suddenly—from an everyday situation, a phrase, a melody, or a riff developed in the moment.

It is precisely through this combination of influences and creative freedom that the band seeks to carve out its own space within rock.

Songwriting as a Starting Point.Composition plays a central role in the project.

Songs can emerge spontaneously or from a planned concept. Lyrics, melodies, and titles are developed from everyday experiences, observations, and ideas that spark the composers’ interest.

One example is “History Repeating Itself,” the band’s first composition, created from a reflection on the human impact of armed conflicts.

Another significant moment occurred when Alexandre Ramos, manager of CPM 22, challenged the young musicians to create a song in Portuguese before a performance at Mobydick.

The challenge resulted in “Presente,” a song developed in just two days after the members studied references related to CPM 22’s style.

Later, the song also received an English-language version, titled “Surprise,” which the band plans to release on digital platforms by the end of the year.

This episode demonstrates an important characteristic of IDIOMATIC: the ability to transform challenges into creative experiences.

Contemporary Themes and a Youthful Perspective

The lyrics also reflect the perspective of a generation growing up amid technological, social, and cultural changes.

The band shows an interest in themes related to human struggles, personal relationships, social issues, technology, behavior, and the emotions experienced during adolescence.

The aim, however, is not merely to present problems.

The musicians say they seek ways for their songs to serve as tools for reflection. The intention is for listeners to find in the music a way to interpret situations in their own lives.

This perspective reinforces an important aspect of the project: IDIOMATIC uses the youth experience not as a limitation, but as an artistic point of view.

Media Exposure

In 2026, the band also began expanding its presence in the media.

Among the experiences mentioned are appearances and features related to TV A Tribuna, TV Record Litoral, CBN FM 97.3, RTL FM 91.7, Colégio Objetivo, and the Aforismo Podcast.

For the band members, appearing on radio, television, and podcasts represents more than just promotion.

It is also an opportunity to realize that there is an audience interested in discovering new sounds and in keeping rock music alive on the music scene.

Their relationship with the media also sparked another reflection: the way in which television, radio, social media, and podcasts can help showcase artists and influence the discovery of new music.

National Competition and Recognition

Another important chapter in the band’s journey came with their participation in the 20th SMPENG Original Band Music Competition in 2026.

The song “History Repeating Itself” placed IDIOMATIC among the competition’s standout acts—an experience the band members consider crucial for gauging the band’s artistic development alongside more established acts.

The result also bolstered the young musicians’ confidence in their own work.

More than just a ranking, their participation served as practical experience in composition, performance, production, and presentation.

For a band that began its journey in 2026, competing alongside more experienced groups became a significant part of the process maturation.

From the studio and rehearsal to the stage

A composition doesn’t necessarily remain the same from its first version.

IDIOMATIC explains that some songs undergo instrumental and lyrical changes during the development process. In certain performances, new elements may also emerge spontaneously.

This kind of freedom depends on the chemistry between the musicians.

The live lineup features Vini Lollel on vocals, piano, and double bass, and Jule Holls on electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and backing vocals, with accompanying musicians helping to expand the band’s sonic experience.

The result is a performance that seeks to preserve the essence of the compositions while also allowing them to take on new possibilities in front of the audience.

Preserving the Essence Amid Growth

As new opportunities arise, one of the main challenges becomes growing without losing one’s identity.

For IDIOMATIC, this means preserving the punk essence present in their rock music, continuing to use metaphors in their lyrics, and maintaining original songwriting as a fundamental element of their artistic brand.

At the same time, the band shows an interest in experimenting.

One of the projects mentioned involves a potential partnership with the Orquestra Geek de Bertioga, in a collaboration that could blend the band’s original rock with orchestral sounds.

This experience points to a characteristic that may shape the group’s future trajectory: experimenting with new formats without abandoning its essence.

A New Generation of Rock

IDIOMATIC’s story is still in its early stages. But precisely for that reason, its journey can be seen as a portrait of a new generation of musicians who are growing up connected to the world, to digital platforms, and to diverse cultural influences.

Hailing from Santos, Vini Lollel and Jule Holls demonstrate that youth does not have to mean a lack of artistic commitment.

Their routine of studying, rehearsing, performing, composing, and promoting their music shows that building a musical career requires preparation and persistence.

By choosing to play original rock, writing songs in English, and seeking their own identity, IDIOMATIC has established a vision that aims to transcend the boundaries of their hometown.

The band is still writing its story. However, from their very first performance, one idea has remained their guiding principle: to create their own music, develop their identity, and transform experiences into songs capable of resonating with diverse audiences.

From Santos to Brazil, and perhaps from Brazil to the world, according to the members themselves, with their eyes set on the world—IDIOMATIC represents a generation of young people who not only listen to rock but also want to actively participate in its future.
